Artificial intelligence or AI as it is more commonly known has become one of the fastest growing technologies in the world and has become an integral part of everyone’s lives within the last five years. Starting from the concept of machine learning and neural networks, AI is now reshaping the global economy. The recent developments include the release of tools such as ChatGPT in 2022 which has popularized the application of AI while ignoring the advancements that are being made in sectors such as design and manufacturing.

The current emerging generative AI or the one that is used to create new content and designs is being widely used in design and engineering software. It is providing new ways for enhancing productivity and introducing innovation in the organizational structures as they seek to enhance their business processes while cutting down on the costs that are incurred.

The Autodesk’s 2024 State of Design & Make report shows that 66% of the respondents think that AI is going to be critical for their companies in the next two to three years. It is fascinating to observe how many sectors, initially resistant to change and dependent on manual labor, are now turning to AI to survive.

How generative AI changes approach to design

Generative AI is changing the way that designers think about their practice. Historically, designers used their gut feelings, experience, and trial and error to address the issues that required numerous design solutions. Generative AI has brought a new element to the table as the software can create numerous designs and variations while taking into consideration factors like material and structural constraints or stylistic choices that the user may have set; it is capable of coming up with ideas that may not have crossed the human mind.

Generative AI excels at producing various scenarios and improving designs in the initial stages. Within applications such as architecture, or product design, it can formulate both structural and functional models of design while still exploring the imaginative possibility. Mechanical design software Autodesk Inventor has presented how AI can generate numerous designs based on set parameters or adjust existing ones, significantly speeding up the process.

According to Mike Haley, the SVP of Research at Autodesk, Artificial Intelligence looks at all the possible ways of designing a system and then presents it to the professionals to choose the most suitable one. This has moved from the conventional trial and error approach to using artificial intelligence as a tool of creation.

The use of generative AI is evident to be dispersed across industry. In construction, the use of Artificial Intelligence to generate design enhances material, time, and environmental management. In the field of product design, AI takes into account various processes that will enable it to come up with better solutions to the problem at hand within a shorter time span and at a lower cost. It is fascinating to watch how companies that adopted generative AI are stepping into the future not just in terms of output, but creativity as well.

How AI improves efficiency and new ideas in manufacturing

Manufacturing sector is also taking advantage of Artificial Intelligence. Some of the ways through which AI helps in improving the manufacturing process includes optimization of supply chain logistics, improving the efficiency of the assembly line and identifying the likelihood of equipment failure before it occurs. These predictive capabilities that are based on data mining are useful in increasing safety and efficiency in areas where accuracy is critical, for instance aerospace and automobile production.

Some of the aerospace firms such as Airbus are already applying AI into the manufacturing process. AI systems are used to prevent risks and standardize processes to get the right information for decision-making to increase productivity. Stefan List from Airbus as the head of Cabin Market Insights points out that AI is useful in delivering standard results that are safe. This is owing to the fact that AI can track and enhance the production processes of manufacturers, thus guaranteeing quality with the least compromise on risk.

However, the application of AI does not only seek to improve the performance of manufacturing processes but also transform them. It enables organizations to seek new materials, to innovate on the production processes, and to fast track the prototyping processes.

AI enhances accuracy, time efficiency, resource management, and risk minimization by incorporating insights from experiences, making it invaluable for industries focused on innovation and optimization.

The future outlook on AI application

As AI continues to develop, it has become increasingly important for companies to focus on its integration. Autodesk’s State of Design & Make report revealed that 72% of the firms have boosted their budgets for AI and other new technologies in the last three years, and 32% of them are planning to significantly increase investment over the next three years. Organizations are now coming to the understanding that AI not only helps organizations to sustain industry leadership but also to foster growth and creativity across the increasingly dynamic business environment.

AI is commonly used in design and manufacturing to automate processes, improve efficiency, and provide valuable insights for decision-making. Seeing this transformation happen, I have come to understand that AI is not the future, rather it is the present that is already transforming the business of tomorrow.

The future of design and manufacturing using AI is expected to be of collaboration between people and AI systems. Therefore, as companies are putting their money on AI, they must equally put their resources on building competencies that enable employees to work in harmony with the machines. In the end, it is my conviction that organizations that are planning to achieve their goals in the coming years will have to turn to the opportunities offered by AI without forgetting about the people.

Conclusion

In summary, the application of AI in design and manufacturing is not just a trend but a transformative force reshaping these industries. By enhancing creativity, efficiency, and innovation, AI is enabling organizations to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
